Thank you so much! It's been a while since I made anything I was this happy with, especially from a cold start with next to no warning I was even going to do it. Seriously. I went from being bored to elbows-deep in about an hour.
I keep taking it out and messing around with it. It has so much visual appeal, and it's fun in a other ways, too, because the pieces slide around and make a nice noise, and they're hard and smooth but still with slight variations in texture and irregularities in the edges, and in places, you can feel the thickness of the paint. The canvas is heavy. It WANTS to be handled.
The pieces are those little wooden discs you can get in packages at the craft store. Lightweight, flimsy. I was going to do these as a trial run, and order some genuine hardwood discs the same size and do a final version, but these came out so nice I went ahead and finished them up. I'll still order the nicer ones and re-do the set at some point, but right now I'm satisfied with what I've done

Gee...all those years of living with cats taught me that the "slightly tacky/dry-but-grabby" phase of acrylic painting was for embedding cat hairs into the surface of all my paintings! *laughs*
Oh GORGEOUS! Yes, seriously appealing, exotic and beautifully done. I, too, adore Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars books and agree with all your stipulations.
You amaze me, woman, that you persevere and get this creative stuff done. When I'm feeling depressed and anxious, I curl up in a little ball and read and hide from the world. I never used to be that way; too many slap-downs at this age, I think. But it's an excuse and I need to get my arse in gear.
Thank you! I really wanted to make it look exotic without specifically evoking any Earthly culture, because that can get gross and appropriate-y real fast, but I think it looks good, and it's its own thing. I have a feeling it's a Green Martian design.
*hugs*
Saw your post, sending love and happy thoughts.
I frequently curl up into a ball and hide. I come out again eventually. All part of the process, and it's necessary sometimes for protection from the storms. Doing it on purpose when I think I might need it actually saves time. I need less of it later.

I am a little unclear--are the playing pieces wooden? Leather?
Also, how do you use the cocoa powder? If you smudge it, does it leave permanent stain? Do you need to use it wet or dry?

Thanks for the inspiration.
