Adventurotica needs to find a printer! YOU CAN HELP!

Nov 04, 2012 02:26

Long story short, the printer we were using won't take adult material, and we need to find someone else, stat. They charged $5 a book, we currently have a place that runs $12. That's a big kick in the pants, and we would really like to find something better if we can. So if you can help us find a place that can produce a 6x9 trade paperback with ( Read more... )

For runs that low, I'm afraid I really can't help off the top of my head. For production-scale runs of at least 5000, I can give you a few names of printers. They probably won't charge you more than $2 a book, but obviously it's a LOT more books than you were thinking of selling, and a lot more cost. There's a comic book printer I know that might be able to help you out with a run of 100 or so, but they don't really do paperbacks and I wasn't satisfied with the quality of the stock that they were offering for that, so I don't think I'd recommend them for your purposes ( ... )

Brio books appears to be out of business: http://www.oaklandauthors.com/why-oakland-authors-why-now/

Knowing the name of the publisher you (naamah-darling) tried to use would be useful for comparison in terms of how I formulate search strings. That said, $5 a book is, to me, unheard-of - and I'd potentially make use of such a publisher down the road.

Unfortunately, digging around online has turned up nothing in that price range so far, but I'll keep looking.

It was an outfit called Snowfall Press, though I'm not inclined to link them as they are on my shit list right now. Their rate calculator gave me an estimate of $5.25 for a 400 page book (a guesstimate for The Golden Mask) with 0.80 extra for packing per. For P&P at 510 pages they quoted $6.35 per book plus the 80 cents. Now we're looking at The Book Patch, who are adult-content friendly so long as it is marked as such, but they want $12.69 per book, down to $11.42 if we order more than 50, and that doesn't include shipping. The absolute basement is $8.89 for an order over 1,000, which we're not going to get close to.

Hmm. For small run presses, I've found a decent source list - but I'm finding it terribly trying to extract estimates from specific presses. The list I'm currently looking through is: http://www.bookmarket.com/ondemand.htm - I dunno what I'll turn up, but it's going to take a while, most likely, presuming I turn up anything.

It's looking like CreateSpace.com (Amazon's POD project) is accepting erotica now, which lowers up front costs - but looking at naamah-darling's tag for Amazon, it looks like you guys were having problems with them on a number of levels.

*shrugs and dives back into digging at the POD list*

Came over via Ashbet. Powell's books has the Espresso book machine via on demand books. It is in Portland, I've seen it (it is awesome), and I believe they do take web orders. Powell's seems like a pretty laid back book store, so maybe give it a whirl?

Beat me to it! They state the 'average' price is $10-20 but the individual Espresso Book Machine locations set the prices it looks like... there are a couple locations on the map closer than Portland. I know EBM online takes erotica (I did a quick search of current titles.)

Powells has good shipping policies as well, I recommend contacting them with the story thus far, they might be able to make a deal.

A friend of mine (posted in my journal, but since this is public and mine is f-locked, I'm going to refrain from using a name) made the following suggestion:

They should talk with Jean-Marie Stine at Renaissance e-Books. She runs a large, serious publishing venture which is mostly erotica. She's not a "pay-to-publish" shop, but if she isn't interested, I'm sure she'll have good advice.

While it doesn't look like Renaissance does print editions, Ms. Stine might have a recommendation for a printer -- and this also might be a chance to get your work out to more readers, if Renaissance is a good fit as a publisher!

If Powell's doesn't work out, try the Harvard Bookstore in Harvard Sq. I, um, may know some people who work there. They have a book making machine named Paige M. Gutenborg. As they sell erotica I'd be completely unsurprised if they were willing to print your book for you. No idea on the costs though.

It looks like they don't ship outside Boston metro area, so I'm not sure how that would work.
