That fucking sucks.

Andy Whitfield dies of lymphoma.I knew he was ill, but kept hoping he would rally. By all accounts he was a really great guy, and I am sorry for his family's loss, and for his friends, of which he apparently had many ( Read more... )

I completely agree with you. He also struck me as a decent gent, you know? Serious about his work, but never really an utter shite about it. He loved it all. I'm so sad for his little ones too.

Yeah, I hadn't known he had kids. That sucks. I know I'm supposed to be all "Having kids doesn't make someone dying any sadder, rargh!" but fuck that. It IS sadder. Those kids are not going to have their dad around to be there for them, and that's awful.

I think it is harder for kids, hands down. And it doesn't help when we don't have the answers for them because we're dealing with death in our own ways. It's scary when you can't articulate how you feel!

It certainly does for the kids. I mean. Damn.

Is that the same Spartacus that's coming/returning to Starz later this year?

Yes, but with a different actor as Spartacus, obviously.

Indeed--I wasn't sure if/how much of the upcoming season had already been filmed. (I didn't see any of the prior season(s), but have been favorably impressed by the trailers for prior season(s) as well as the upcoming.)

He was diagnosed shortly after the first run, so they didn't film anything else with him. I think they put out Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the prequel series, as a way to sort of stall before doing the proper sequel, hoping Andy would improve. Alas, no.

The new guy looks like he'll do fine, so at least there's that, but the whole situation pretty much sucks.

i was so sorry to hear that he passed. It took me a few eps to really get into "Blood and Sand" but once i did, i freaking LOVED it. No, it wasn't on a par with "Rome" but it was still delightful escapism and Andy truly did look like he was having a blast with the role.

I think people who went into it expecting something erudite and serious were probably lucky to have survived the shock of having their expectations shattered. Rome was really good, but it was serious and really depressing at times. Spartacus was just stupid fun. And I think it's totally awesome that they showed a lot of male nudity, too.

Those are exactly the reasons i loved the show. Granted, i adored "Rome" for what it was, but "Spartacus" offered something else that i equally loved.
