This is eating my brain.

Could someone who has Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Saint-Germain series look up the name of the Roman horse race in (I THINK it was) Blood Games? The horse race that was conducted through the city and not in an arena. I'm trying to find more information about that sort of race historically, but I borrowed those books to read ( Read more... )

I flipped through Blood Games and didn't see a through-the-city race, but The Palace does have the palio, where Saint-Germain nearly gets trampled by the oncoming horses.

I think that must be it. Thank you. Not having the books is a real pain in the ass when you're trying to remember what was happening in which book.

Marguerite Henry wrote a book on that race called Gaudenzia, Pride of the Palio.
Very interesting story. Crazy crazy race. Through the cobbled streets (can we say slippery under horse hooves?!) around hair pin turns and stone building corners, all the while trying to hack off the head piece of the lead horse. They put boys up on the horses for speed...
Crazy.
