Went in to the Red Cross today trying for my record-breaking third straight deferral, only to be told that I do in fact have enough hit points to donate. Which is good. I'm a six hit-die monster, after all ( Read more... )

Preach it sista! My 4th donation of the year was back in august. We have a program here at work, but they're about 3 weeks out of synch with my donation schedule so I have to go into the office.

My veins suck as well. When I gave last week, the guy had a hell of a time getting the needle in right. When he finally got it and asked whether it hurt, I lied and said it was fine just so he wouldn't monkey with it anymore! ...I still have a big, ugly bruise.

Er...to the non-donating people whom I've just scared away from ever donating: the time before that was really lovely and not painful at all!

I so wish I could :( Anemia says no for me and malaria says no for my husband. I'm glad people like you are still willing to give blood, though!

Have you tried drinking a couple of big glasses of water before going to have your blood drawn? I was amazed how much it helped. I have to have a fasting blood draw every three months, and it was driving me crazy because the (not incompetant) nurses had such a horrible time finding my veins. One time, they stuck me four times before trying to go with what they had, and then they had to call me back in because it wasn't enough.

Then I realized that while I was fasting, I wasn't drinking. So I drank a bunch of water before going in, and it was a piece of cake! It was like a miracle.

Oh, man, this is WITH drinking! XD

I go in practically floating!

When I don't drink, it's just impossible! I learned that the hard way!

Youch! You poor girl!

Awesome that you go ahead and do it anyway. I really admire that kind of generosity.

Well, I'd be lying if I said it particularly hurt once the needle is in. It doesn't. It feels a little icky, and it maybe burns, but it's no great shakes as far as discomfort. So it doesn't bother me.

The actual insertion varies from "I felt nothing at all" to "wee pinch." Even when they just can NOT find a vein, it's usually not painful. Just sort of oogy. Thank heavens for a high pain threshold.

What SUCKS is the bruising from multiply perforated blood vessels. XD
