Oh well... I am glad somebody is enjoying it. For me, cricket season means radio on for most of the day (thanks to whoever invented headphones), allnighter matches, and totally baffling cricket-speak! :)))
Did you know that they used to play cricket in the All Souls library? And even broke a fonger of an important statue! :)
I quite like the sound of cricket. I rarely pay any attention to it, but the gentle rhythm of the commentary and the plock plock sounds of the bat hitting the ball sound so peaceful, in the same way as the Shipping Forecast on Radio 4. The rules were explained to me in my first year so I even understand about 50% of the cricket-speak.
I've been too closed-minded to adopt cricket as a game, I think. I used to go down to see my father play cricket on Saturday afternoons when I was small, and various of his fellow enthusiasts would assume I was interested in the game. I normally wished that I had brought more books, or that indeed I had brought any books, as it usually seemed wrong somehow to take them outdoors.
I should really move on from these childhood positions, but they still lurk! I have become a little sentimental about cricket, now; partly because one of my favourite eighteenth-century people, Frederick, prince of Wales, was a real playing captain of the Middlesex and England cricket teams, and partly because those who like it often feel it belongs to a vanished consensual Britain, despite the modern lifestyles of many of the players. I think that it has been eclipsed a little in the national life since the BBC lost television rights - it would be good if it could be restored, at least to balance the baleful influence of over-indulged Premiership football.
