hey I have a question: does NaNoWriMo have to be original fiction or can it by fanfiction? I'm considering writing, but I just wanted to find out. Thank you dear!

There is a huge fanfiction section to NaNo.

The one big "rule" is that it needs to be a new story. And there really is a reason to that idea, if you have a story that you've already started then you will have ties to that story that will be hard to brake. To really turn off your inner editor and just let the story flow however and where ever it will, you need something that you aren't emotionally tied to.
