I always wondered how Hale would react if he knew that Kate fell for Doug. Hee!

I think that Hale doesn't get enough love.

He could have held Kate to her promise and married her, and they might have been happy together, but he was truly a wonderful man and let her go.

That afternoon in Chicago, when Kate was looking for her earing, I think after the camera cut away Hale was very calm and cool about it. He would have told her that he loved her and would always love her, but that she needed to give her feeling for Doug a try. The old "if you love someone let them go" routine. I also think he would have cried once he was alone.
