I really like the sense of bureaucracy that you've built into this world. The waiting rooms and the mandatory screenings and professional smiles make the vampire infrastructure feel very realistic while John's quiet resistance adds a sense of dread.
The donation center you describe, with young people gathering awkwardly on chairs and a pervasive air of forced cheerfulness, reminds me very strongly of a Red Cross blood drive.

I'm enjoying this story so far, and I can't wait to see where you go with it.
