Sigh. I boot the XP box about every two months, to do something (like Visio) that requires M$ Windows ( don't say it, Visio 2007 doesn't run well under CrossOver Office or Wine)

Why is it that I have to budget in three hours of updates before I can do any useful work?

A full VM running XP is just fine. The problem is in emulation it has issues with authentication

Dude. I just turned on an old laptop running Ubuntu, after ignoring it for months, Can you guess how long I waited for the updates to complete?

Maybe you just need to leave your XP system turned on overnight once a week.

Does the XP box need to be exposed to anything that would call for updates (i.e. the internet)? When I get a Mac I'm planning to keep the windows box around for legacy software, on the home network but not on the internet, and I've been assuming that this means I won't need to keep paying for anti-virus software for it. Am I missing something? (Assume I've got basic clues about not transmitting problems from other machines on the local network.)

Is that a trick question?

Only marginally. I tend to keep the box up to date when I boot is since it does live with a live internet connection.

The update cycle for the two anti-virus products that it runs takes about ten minutes, it's all the layered M$ hotfixes and reboots between each one that takes the time.
