Dreams of electoral reform in Canada

A lot of my Canadian friends are posting about how upset they are about the Conservatives winning a majority last night, particularly since they only took 40% of the popular vote. I'm right there with you! I was hoping for a Con minority and strong NDP because I want to see electoral reform get a serious discussion. Well, I got 50% of what I ( Read more... )

Fair Vote Canada needs rebranding. "Fair" is weak language against something that is patently WRONG.

I find it maddening that I can't vote for my PM directly; that I have to vote for the candidate in my riding and that eventually determines who's the PM. The rep I wanted in my area was not from the same party as the PM I wanted - which do I vote for? (BTW, I got neither.)

[Though honestly, I also find it maddening that I have to vote for parties, rather than for people, or better, for individual issues...]

The whole "are you representing the population or are you representing the region" thing is tricky and I don't think anyone's figured a perfect system to handle it.

My best guess is a bi-cameral system with one house representing local districts and one house elected at-large with a proportional system. In the US, imagine keeping the House but replacing the Senate with a PR system.
