Last night Ben the Philosopher and I saw Casablanca at the Brattle. It was his second time, my...um...dozenth? And of course, the glory of that film is that it's so rich, it can bear a dozen viewings. Ben mentioned that he hadn't remembered how funny it is, and that he hadn't previously caught the subtext about Rick/America and his/its ( Read more... )

And yet they've repeatedly done tests over the last few years of changing the names and submitting the script to studios and agents.

It gets rejected for being slow, boring, and lacking sex and violence.

Anybody in the movie business who doesn't recognize the script for Casablanca should be summarily fired. And possibly executed.

That's what I've always wondered about this. (And what makes me suspect it may be an urban legend.)

Can they honestly not recognize it? And if they test for recognizing it and eliminate those people, have they already eliminated everyone who would appreciate it?

To go back to your original point, btw, I would be shocked, SHOCKED, to find out someone has written Rick/Louis slash.

I've always thought that was a wonderfully homolascivious (is that a word? it is now.) line for a movie made in the 40s.

I'll get around to giving it a decent viewing one of these days.

Without other context, that exchange would seem to be a setup for a pun, given how the word "broad" was often used in those days.

the full meaning of Rick saying, "Ask your wife.

There's a lot going on in that response, isn't there?

Rick: "He is? Well, Captain Renault's getting broad-minded."

I've always found that one amusing.

Possibly of all time, certainly of the pre-modern era.

I wore out my VHS copy from re-watching and forcing most everyone I knew to sit through it.

I also love some of the back-story and how it got made.
