Het couples protesting the restriction on gay marriage isn't really new - I was hearing about couples in the US doing that two or three years ago. Not to belittle the action, of course, I think it's great when *anyone* protests that injustice in *any* way...but it's not really new (and hence, not interesting, at least to me).
It sounds to me the interesting bit is they are going at it by asking for a civil union. That seems a clever approach and one I haven't heard before.
Of course, then you have France where there is no law making the civil unions same-sex only which resulted in a huge increase in heterosexual civil unions. (In fact, number of marriages has gone down just about every year since the law was passed and the number of civil unions gone up.)

Ah, the irony -- they said giving gay couples "marriage" would have led to the death of the institution, but giving them "civil unions" preserved it. Except not, actually...
