Growing Potatoes in Containers

Jul 08, 2009 09:32

Before I begin, I should say that I did a lot of reading about potatoes in containers to get an idea of what to do. There are actually a lot of sites out there that describe how to do it, so it's probably not necessary for me to write up my process. However, since I created this blog to track lessons I've learned, I'm going to anyway.

I wasn't sure about it when I started this summer, but I love to experiment in my garden so I thought it was worth a shot. Assuming I actually dig up potatoes when I harvest, I'll definitely be growing them again next year - but in a burlap (or other) sack instead of a pot.

excuse my nosiness - where are you in the world to be planting potatoes in june? are they earlies or maincrop? I planted my (second earlies) in March and i've just harvested one lot a week ago - the others need digging up too but I've had no time lately.
I would have got more if I'd done as you're supposed to and kept topping up the compost but hey.

I'm in Canada, zone 4 or 5, depending on who you ask. This spring was quite cold - we had heavy frosts right through to the end of May, and I was nervous about planting anything until the threat of frost had passed.

I have no idea what kind of potatoes I planted; they were at the nursery in a basket and labelled "seed potatoes". My reaction was pretty much "Ooh! Gimme!" See, I don't actually know what I'm doing. I just read a lot and then try stuff. ;)

This web site is really a walk-through for all of the info you wanted about this and didn’t know who to ask. Glimpse here, and you’ll definitely discover it.
