Actually, I think I read Lauren Kate's first book. She's a lot better than I expected.

Really? I've only had a few sources of opinions. I'm just really hesitant to read any of these new YA novels.

I think, to some extent, what is happening is that because Twilight books are selling all supernaturalish teen books are being put into similarish covers in the hope of hitting the same audience. I know a couple of weeks ago I saw Meg Cabot's Mediator books put out with new covers and new titles and that series has been out YEARS. It was originally put out under very colourful covers (of her usual sort) and actually was cancelled by the publisher for not selling enough (which was a shame. I liked it.)

But yeah, if Lauren Kate is who I think she is, I liked her. She managed to mix my childhood love of boarding school books with a supernatural element.

Yeah, that definitely is a factor. They're catering to the Twilight craze to try and grab their attention. And yeah, it makes me sad when old covers I liked are now impossible to find because they're being replaced.

This is one of the reviews I read on it, if it is the book you're thinking of. I give the reviewer credit for introducing me to "Ash" by Malinda Lo - it was a beautiful read.

Is it true that somebody offered to buy Cassie Clare an iPod and she asked for one with more space on it? Wow, I didn't know she became a published author.

I think that was one of the things she did, yes. There was also telling her f-list that her and her bf's laptops were stolen and as a result, there was a fund to buy her new ones.

Apparently they're making movies out of her books too. Ugh. I have been told on several occasions that a character in her published series is simply her fanfic!Draco with a different name.

I just don't have any respect for someone who plagiarized, even if it was "just fanfic" as some people might say in her defense.
