It's taken me all night, as my computer has been most uncooperative, but as promised, or rather teased, yesterday: giant kitties, for your viewing pleasure
( Read more... )
It's really nice isn't it? The old building doesn't even compare, but they did have outdoor areas... It's been a long time since they were just in cages.
There have been a lot of improvements made in just the last few years. We're going tomorrow for the puppet building! We're all excited to see the Henson puppets.
I think the last time I went to the zoo I was still living at my mother's house, which should give you some idea of just how long ago that was! I think it was probably to see the white lion cubs. It seems like they don't have as many animals as they used to (no elephants :(--!), but the ones that are still there are getting even better care than ever before.
It's amazing to see all the improvements going on, not only for the cats, but the new 'wetlands' they've installed to filter water, and the new children's zoo. I do have to say, though, I miss the monorail! I mean, sure it was old, rickety, and not *exactly* safe, but it was a staple of my childhood. Oh well.
I didn't have time to see any of the Henson puppets in person, but the old cat house has been converted into a (super creepy) movie theater showing a little film about conservation featuring the puppets, so I got to see a little of that as I was passing through.
Kitties!! I haven't been to the Phila zoo in conscious memory (I'm told I went as a small child) for some reason but I've been to the Houston zoo three times I think in the past year! They tend to have fences in front of the viewing areas that make it impossible to take these kind of pics though, these look great! I also tend to go at the end of the day when the animals are all sleeping. XD
They did such a fantastic job with the cat installation; all of the sections have gigantic plate glass windows (probably several inches thick) so you get a completely unobstructed view, and the animals--should they be so inclined--can come right up to you.
Growing up in the city the zoo was always a go-to field trip destination; even in high school, the entire art department would go there annually, and we'd usually be assigned a list of animals we had to locate and draw. I've hardly been there at all as an adult, though after this trip I'm going to get a membership so I can go whenever I feel like it. Aside from the animals, they've got a great collection of unusual plants and old trees, and it seems like a great place to just take a walk and get some fresh air (better than South Philly, at any rate!).
We went to the State Museum in Trenton every other week when I was growing up, I swear! I went back nostalgically a few years ago and I'd swear nothing there had changed.
Zoo. Envy. I want to say the closest one to me, not counting the Landing, and no one counts that since the revamp (and then, only if you wanted to see otters) is in Columbia. Sigh.
Also, big kitty envy. It's funny how your pictures reduced me to my 8 year old self shrieking, "Jaguar!"

Thanks for sharing! We have a tiny, tiny zoo that is for children only. It looks creepy if you show up without a kid in tow.
