Subway at night: Open!

Jun 27, 2010 03:34

The subway could be crowded and a hassle, though less so during this time of night, and it was often preferable to the headache of owning a vehicle in the city.  He never did pick up the appeal of driving.  Something could be said for the availability of public transport in New York, despite his increasingly negative opinion of living there.  He ( Read more... )

Mitch hated the subway for many reasons. Many, many, many reasons. Every time he needed to get anywhere he would typically take a cab if not walk. That way he was just stuck with a guy that probably barely knew english rather than a whole metal car full of smelly sweaty idiots who didn't know the word soap. And standing? Argh. However, he had left his bank card back at his apartment and he was running low on cash. Riding the subway was the cheapest solution next to walking ( ... )

Before the other man even sat down... before he even had a chance to look at him but could feel his vaguely threatening presence as soon as he stepped onto the subway, Mortimer felt his jaw tense and his fingers clench instinctively. But he smiled easily as the man next to him, if not briefly and with only a small adjustment of the corners of his mouth. It was strange seeing his brother with a human face, though the pinched and perpetually annoyed expression was familiar.

"It was an interesting twist, then," Mort sounded only marginally disappointed, staring down at the book before slipping it into his manbag. "Usually it's the brother. With a box or an axe."

Though it wasn't her favourite way of transport, Helen had to admit that the subway was very useful. And way better when you found a free seat, which was not her case today, so she was standing up at the side of a guy who was reading what seemed a mystery book.

But the brakes suddenly jammed too quickly and Helen found herself over the lap of the guy, her cheeks red.

"Ops. I'm sorry..."

"Ah..." Mort hesitated but didn't seem particularly flustered or surprised, though unfamiliar with the etiquette in this situation. Was it proper to touch the woman to help her back up, or would that be seen as too invasive? Deciding it would be too rude not to help her and that the invasive nature of the situation was already completed by her being in his lap, Mort eased Helen back upright.

"Would you like to sit?" he offered, getting to his own feet. It had made reading easier, but it would be entirely selfish to not allow others the opportunity when they clearly required it.

"Thank you, but no" Oh God why was this so awkward "I'm getting off at the next stop, and that would be a little bit opportunistic, but still , thank you for the offering"

She was clearly a wee bit uneasy with this situation

Leaving his seat open after his decision to stand, Mort stepped out of the way so somebody else could take up the offer. As desired a seat was, it didn't take long before another passenger slipped in to occupy it. He was getting off at the next stop as well, though refrained from making note of it.

Sensing her uneasiness, Mort refrained from saying anything at all. Something seemed different about this woman, however, though he couldn't quite identify what it was. Catching himself staring, Mort forced himself to look away.

Hebe walked into the subway, looking around for a place to sit. When she didn't see one, she opted to put her back against one of the poles, sitting on the floor. Normally she would have stood instead of taking up more space on the floor, but it had been a particularly rough day at work. She rested her head on her arms, ignoring the mutters of the annoyed people around her.

Realizing his own stop was getting closer, Mortimer began rounding up his belongings by slipping his book into his bag and quickly checking his cell for the time. There were a couple alerts for unread texts, but he wasn't in any hurry to read them before shoving the phone back into his pocket.

The girl sitting on the floor briefly caught his attention, but it didn't seem unusual enough to keep it.

As he picked up his belongings, Hebe noticed some money fall out and flutter to the ground. She leaned over to pick it up before reaching over to give it to him, still sitting on the ground. "Excuse me? Sir? You dropped this." She wondered vaguely why he made her slightly uncomfortable, but brushed it off.

It took a moment for Mort to register that he was being spoken to, raising his eyebrows at the woman as he glanced down at her. Missing what she had said and not understanding why she was holding out money, Mortimer shook his head with some confusion. "No thank you."
