Determined, mature, serious, brave, introverted, wanting to live someplace quiet-I may be reading the wrong fairytales/legends/myths/etc, but those qualities remind me of the Satyr as well!
I actually see Merfolk. Your "this or that" section really fits with an illusive creature of the sea, but I think they're more likely to take care of their kin than most of the other options. Considering how they tend to avoid people, I imagine they're not so good at dealing with humans either. I can see some Satyr, but unless I'm mistaken Satyrs are usually portrayed as more sensual/lusty than family oriented?
I actually saw Nymph, for the femininity and motherly-like disposition. If I recall correctly, they often showed up as the wives of heroes and mothers to their children. I could also see them as being reclusive to humans and having introverted personalities.
