I like this process. My worst problem seems to be that I get bogged down in fact-checking my fiction, so there is all this research into the invisible backstory in my head and one thing going wrong with that can get the whole thing tumbling down.

Not sure how to fix that...

I have a somewhat similar approach, and usually a few hours before the deadline go "oh crap, well let's stick with whatever it is".
