I’m seven years old, holding my grandmother’s hand and counting backwards in Japanese with her while the voice on the television counts backwards in English. “San! Ni! Ichi ( Read more... )

This was the first time I've actually known what to write for non-fiction first. I'm glad you liked it! It's very much summer here now, thunderstorms and fireflies and stargazing time, and I'm really feeling it.

I love this. :)

Good luck with the ceiling! I think painting ceilings is designed to get more on you than on it.

"I love this. :)"

Thank you so much! :D

"Good luck with the ceiling! I think painting ceilings is designed to get more on you than on it." We're having the tiles redone in both showers in two weeks. I'm thinking I'll sneak in there at night and paint stars, since it'll be a total mess anyway. I'll let you know how it goes!

You're welcome. :)

Good luck! Just before the old ones go is probably a good time, since the paint that gets on them will be carried out with the old tiles and not get on the new ones. :) Might be easier to get a stiff-bristled artist's brush than to use a toothbrush, though; having the handle in line with the brush will probably help with aiming.

Gorgeous entry. So wistful and full of bittersweet memories, and all the ways that you change over time while the stars themselves do not. Loved it.

Thank you so much! I'm glad all that came through... this was my least planned (though easiest conceived) entry yet, and I was pretty nervous about how it would be received.

This was wonderful. It made me cry.

And this - I cup my hands under it and raise them up as though I’m giving it lift, as though it’s a firefly I’m releasing back into the night.

So beautiful.

"This was wonderful. It made me cry."

Oh wow. Just... lots of wow. Thank you so much for that. I don't think I've ever written any personal (not a fiction) stuff that's gotten that reaction before, so I'm feeling pretty awed.

Thank you. Lots.

You did a great job. It was well-crafted, and you invested your memories and emotions into it. They come through.
