It seems our leader George W Bush is keen on making sure that marriage is only ever between a male and a female person. Now, Cece and I just got married, and we just happen to fit that description, but we know plenty of people who love each other very much and don't happen to fit in with mr W's somewhat limited view. Separation of church and state

I don't think the government should have one damned thing to say about marriage. Marriage is a sacrament and the gov should stay out of it. Now, what about mutual support contracts? If "marriage", for purposes of "the state", is about raising children and/or caring for one another, should it matter whether the two people involved are having sex or not? At this point, we penalize parents for helping their children and vice versa, and penalize friends for sharing expenses and child care (by offering fewer benefits and not allowing for the same kind of insurance coverage, etc

I once wrote a Science-Fiction story where that kind of contract arrangement was fairly standard.
