New Pope to Get Medieval?

As you may already know, Cardinal Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict XVI. If you haven't been following the ongoing story, Joseph Ratzinger is a conservative fundamentalist, and was previously head of the "Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith", which is the body that oversees inquisitions. I can't say I'm a big fan.

political, evil

At 78, I have a hard time understanding how he can effect the change he would like.

Not wanting a reoccurance of 25 years ago, they should have chosen more wisely. Or maybe they *are* wise and this will pacify some before they have to chose again.

I hate to hear what my mother's going to say...

Well, he is older than John Paul I was (78 vs 65), though he seems fairly healthy at the moment.

And, even though he says he wasn't hip on the whole idea, he was a member of the HitlerJurgen as a child. I'm overjoyed.

We don't even have to say he's a Neo-Nazi--he was a Nazi.

Yeh, membership in Hitler Youth was mandatory, so he didn't volunteer. I still kind of wonder if it might have influenced his views on authority, though...

This excerpt from one of his memoirs (The Vatican's Enforcer of the Faith by John Allen Jr) is a bit disturbing...

Under Hitler, Ratzinger says he watched the Nazis twist and distort the truth. Their lies about Jews, about genetics, were more than academic exercises. People died by the millions because of them. The church's service to society, Ratzinger concluded, is to stand for absolute truths that function as boundary markers: Move about within these limits, but outside them lies disaster.

We all know what absolutes can do, we fight them everyday. It makes me wonder what absolutes he sticks to - abortion, homosexuality, etc?

As I said before, while I wish no one harm (or dead), knowing how the papacy works - I just hope his time is not long for this world.
