Perhaps it is my lack of experience speaking, yet I do not hold by the assertion that the tree, itself, is a thinking entity. Houses are carved into it; why not a staircase?

Even if the tree itself isn't doing all this to us...someone or something is. Obviously it's all right with houses being carved into the branches. But I think it likes being in control. And carving things into its tree...I think it would notice.

Something quick and not too obvious might be better than a major project that alters the tree itself.
