In one of my classes, there’s this greasy drugged-up junior (I know, that description could apply to a lot of people). For some reason, twice in the past week and a half, he has been prompted to make the proclamation “I’m an atheist” in reference to his religious affiliations. You will find that no matter what you believe in, or what group you consider yourself a part of, there will be people who share the same beliefs or identify with the same group but you want nothing to do with them.

The fact that you don't believe in God and neither does he hardly makes you both the same person. Consider your differing (disclaimer: all of the following is probably differing) intelligence levels, background/life experiences, career goals, interests, preferences, friend groups, levels of sociability, blood alcohol levels, etc.

Being the terribly indecisive person I am, I happen to be agnostic. I believe that I could not possibly know who or what created the universe, whether it was created at all, and all of that.

Consider, also, that Douglas Adams was an atheist (a very outspoken one at that). You are in good company as well as bad.

And there is also what you already said: you don't believe in nothing, just not God.

Yeah sounds like he's an idiot and probably doesn't even have a clue what athiests stand for, he just likes using the neat word he heard from his friends.

If you want something cooler to say, try Satanism. Seriously, go read the Satanic Bible...it's not what you think and quite funny/interesting.
