I've been looking at Manhattan real estate videos in my search for an apartment for my MC (and finding out how to enter a townhouse renovated into apartments)
Actually I found these videos fascinating... I've always been apartments/houses geek..
Here's some of the more amusing ones I've found:

I guess townhouses are the same as any apartment building, they have a lobby leading to stairs and also a place where your superintendent lives.
Like this. I never stepped into a townhouse here myself though, so I'm not certain.

For most place, the one door on the sidewalk you see has an intercom with a keypad for you to ring up or talk to the resident. That door is locked until the resident rings you up. The resident themselves have the key normally to unlock it.
When you open the door, there is usually a couple of apartments that may be on the ground floor and a set of stairs. Or one of them belongs to the superintendent. Some of these places also have the laundry room on the first floor (not all of them though, most people who live in these townhouse styles have to get the laundry done elsewhere). The stairs go as up and as down as need be to reach the other units in the building. These buildings generally are old enough that they do not have elevators.
Hope that helps!
