Yeah, the bits of it I've heard don't sound terribly promising. Once again the Church goes galloping into . . the nineteenth century?

I've heard about the Vatican II stuff from friends and relations who lived through it. One was a guy doing underground guitar masses in the '60s; he's also where i learned a bunch of Tom Lehrer songs. This new translation seems, well, reactionary, and at LEAST two steps back from the one-step-forward that was the vernacular mass.

The (a) problem is that liberal catholics very rarely become priests nowadays so the hierarchy is like a massive example of sampling error.

Also that b) thanks to JP II, from the existing pool of priests, conservatives are the ones who are chosen to become cardinals, and who in turn choose conservatives to be bishops.
