There's also bootlegs all over the place. Clever distribution strategy, really... put it up for a limited time, get everyone to snag it and distribute it themselves, and save a ton on your own hosting and bandwidth costs.
Bwaha, true, although it brings you to the same question anime fans are facing: If fansubs are available for fans before the product is available, will it encourage them to purchase the product when it is? Or will they simply continue to circulate the (then illegal) copies after it's possible to legally purchase them?

In an interview, the the Whedons explain than they know their fanbase is computer literate and they expect a certain amount of piracy. That said, they think that fans will anti-up for such an amazing creative project, and I agree. Most fans will--and the ones that don't, well, they're spreading the word in their own way.

I actually emailed a bunch of coworkers that I've spread the love of Firefly to, as well as a few theatre friends who enjoy wonky musicals. Haven't heard any feedback, but hey - I tried!
