From perezhilton.com:

"Director Catherine Hardwicke won't be coming back to do the Twilight sequel, New Moon, according to Variety.

It was a timing issue, says the report.

The studio wants to rush the movie out in 2009 and wasn't willing to give Hardwicke the time that she wanted to develop the sequel script.

In a statement, Hardwicke said, "I am sorry ( Read more... )

Wow!! Thanks so much for posting this! I hadn't heard anything about this yet! I should start reading perezhilton.com all the time now. I thought that Catherine did an awesome job on Twilight and I was so excited to see what she would do with New Moon. I really think she loved this project and brought out the best in all the actors. It sucks that she won't be able to do that now just because the studio wants to make their money faster. Instant gratification, anyone? On the other hand...I was bummed when I read that the studio originally wouldn't be ready to release New Moon until sometime in 2010. I'm impatient! I'm glad that it will be out in 2009 instead! That is this year!!! I just wish that Catherine could have accommodated the change. It makes sense that they could put this movie out quicker than others because they only have to adapt the book into a screenplay instead of writing one from scratch. I don't think that necessarily means that New Moon will be crap. It could still be very good. I thought the screenplay version of ( ... )

Yeah, they worked together on 13. which is kinda why i'm leery about this... i didn't see 13 but i've read about it and it's supposed to be a good movie, and have a sort of gritty, real-life quality to it. and i totally got that vibe from twilight, too. that kind of gritty, over-cast, hard-core vibe without being "cheesy horror movie" dark. CH did such a kick-ass job with that, and if 13 was kinda the same way, then it's probably like a "thing" of her's... so it sucks that they're just gonna take any old whoever onto new moon now. especially because now they know the series is such a cash cow for them. they best not have some crap director be all, oh, i'll do it!! make me rich!! bah. if it sucks i'm gonna bust a cap.

idk... i want to be optimistic... but i really think summit is shooting themselves in the foot here... especially because with the budget twilight had, they ALREADY had to cut a ton of stuff/locations/etc that they were planning on using in the first one... and if they really think they can get by with new moon having the same budget...
ugh. i'm annoyed. CH was totally kick-ass!! summit's just getting greedy and wants to turn out crappy movies with the twilight stamp as fast as they can. grrr.
