[It really doesn't take Heine too long to get himself from his corner of the mansion to Kanda's, and the knock announcing him wasn't out of any politeness at all; it was just a signal that Kanda should let him in now that he was there.]
[Kanda's almost distracted as he opens the door, his attention less than half on Heine and more than half on the unanswered questions about Lenalee. He opens the door without a word and doesn't invite Heine in, just stands slightly aside and waits for him to come in.]
[Fortunately, Heine doesn't hold much interest in unnecessary words when gestures already do the work and so he steps past the exorcist without a word.
He watches him out the corner of his eye as he stands in the middle of the room, waiting several seconds to see if Kanda is going to draw himself from whatever was distracting him. Or... Yeah, that girl going missing. Huh. Right.
But clearly, to Heine, that problem isn't going anywhere in that moment.]
[Kanda lets the door swing closed and looks at Heine blankly for a moment as though waiting for him to clarify his presence in the room. Nonetheless, the statement still feels like a non sequitur, dragging him out of thoughts he hadn't realized were still preoccupying him.]
What?
Oh.
That woman. I know, I met her. [He doesn't say "And?" but he's clearly waiting for the reason why this should be significant.]
[For a second, Heine looks quite perplexed by Kanda's reaction, staring at him like he had responded by telling Heine what he was thinking of having for lunch or something.
Then it clicks.]
Oh. Not her. Well, yeah, her too, but... [He frowns, turning a look across the room to nothing in particular.] Not her. Someone else.
[Perhaps Heine had been employing a lazy version of a poke-poke-poke-pay-attention-to-me tactic up until that point and had been waiting for Kanda to actually pick up on it, because when it seems like the swordsman is finally giving it more focus Heine glances back at him again.]
Mm. [For anyone else, Heine may have been snippier, more impatient about repeating himself. But Kanda didn't irritate Heine nearly so much.] So you've seen him.
[Heine gives Kanda a look of shock for a half-second before turning his head to stare at the wall separating the two rooms.
His entire body language shifted then, as though Giovanni may as well have been standing right there with the two of them. His shoulders tense, his head lowers and a dark, murderous kind of scowl falls across his face though he doesn't give a real vocal response to this news, only a low, fleeting noise of obvious discontent in his throat.]
[Of course Kanda sees it, and he has no problem reading the sudden change nor does he mistake for a moment its implications: enemies. And there's enough history between him and Heine that he doesn't take that lightly. He frowns as he looks passed Heine to the wall of the next room.]
Someone made in the same place I was. Same as me. But we're different. He never left.
[He gives a snort and turns his face away from the wall, hands shoved deep into pockets and his shoulders hitching up around his ears once more as he lowers his head. The scowl, however, remains quite clear in his eyes, tightening the already sharp angles of his features.]
And since I got something they want he keeps giving me an invite to come back home. Family reunion.
[Kanda knows there's an iceberg hiding behind these words. He's known it since the first time he heard Heine mention, however obliquely, the lab where he came from. Kanda didn't want to talk about it before, and they didn't. He's not sure he wants to talk about it now either. The nagging question about what's happened to Lenalee still lingers, a tugging distraction at the back of his mind.]
Why don't you just give them whatever it is then. [If he was thinking about it more, he would have thought better of the question: one does not simply give one's foes what they want for the sake of expedience. There are consequences to things like that.]

Huh? [Irritatingly, it seems he actually needs to devote more attention to this conversation. Somewhat begrudgingly, he does so.]
Who?
