[After a long day and even longer night in this place, and nothing to indicate that there would be any sudden return trips to No.6, Nezumi had sent the old phone in his room several scathing glares before finally picking it up. The technology was too old to have anything like voice printing or tracing technology, and yet he was still loathe to use ( Read more... )

Well, given that it's already been asked... yeah, I kinda am. You new here, then?

Aren't we all, technically?

[A beat, then:]

So what else have you been asked, aside from the 'help us help you' bit?

Seems like that's for me t'know, yeah? Suffice it t'say I'm helpin' where I can. ... an' since we all wanna go home, we may as well help out an' see what we can find.

Mmm. And how are you helping?

I hardly think that's quite the case. After all, we weren't brought here on purpose, and those who are dealing with the situation are being fairly understanding, I think.

[Gau pauses for a moment, and there's a faint scratching, as of pen on paper. He glances across the room to his partner, then goes back to speaking, the sound still in the background as he writes and talks at the same time.]

Besides, what is being asked of us is basically not to cause trouble and to help defend ourselves and our temporary home, so I don't really see that as too nefarious.

For now. They're being understanding for now. My question isn't towards their actions of the moment, but the expectation of future actions.

[He laughs, softly, then continues dryly.]

Besides, just because something starts with a benign intent, doesn't mean that it can't change in time. In other words, look past today and what will you see?

It's not them I'm concerned about.

[There's a slight tapping noise, as Gau pauses in his writing to tap his pen against the paper.]

Worst case scenario, and this saying we don't get eaten by monsters, we could theoretically... leave. The record-keeping systems in this time period aren't good enough that we'd be caught, and we'd probably just be treated as any immigrants. Do you honestly think the Professors are secretly some kind of super-agents capable of stopping us?

That's your 'worst case scenario'? Leaving?

[He snorts at that and rolls his eyes, immediately reminded of someone else.]

You really are a naive one, aren't you?

They probably will ask us for something, but right now we're guests.

So act properly mindless and don't ask troublesome questions, is that right?

[His tone? Only a touch sarcastic.]

They will or they won't. Either way, they aren't now. The only use of worrying about it is to drive yourself mad with worry.

One could also argue that not worrying at all is like setting yourself up to be a lamb for the slaughter.

Thinking ahead is what keeps a person alive, honestly.

Don't recall saying not to be prepared for disappointment. Please feel free to suggest any alternatives, assuming you have some sort of contingency plan. Considering I've only been here a day? Yeah, I'm pretty content with relaxing a little and not tearing my hair out.

Anyway, there are better ways to approach the situation than the way you just did.

Prepare for disappointment? Heh. That would imply having an elevated expectation to start with.

As for the 'approach', do forgive the lad his uncouth behavior, mi'lady, I fear he's an ill-bred pet.

Tch. [Read: you're irritating, Nezumi.]

What if they did? You think you'd be better off on the streets where any past you spoke of would be the ranting of a madman?

Heh. [Read: Your point?]

And what if they smile those friendly smiles and we wake up facing the point of a soldier's gun? Fancy specimens for the government pawns to pick apart. That's all we'd be.

[Scowling, but he doesn't sound worried or insecure.]

Maybe that's what you'd be. [Kanda doesn't back down to anyone's gun.]

To them. [Dry tone is so very dry.] In their eyes, we would be nothing more than rats in a cage. But thanks.

It's good to know big brother is concerned for me. I can sleep easy tonight now.
