Kanda's decision to come along with this group had been belated, a product perhaps of restlessness. He would generally have considered this kind of work to be the job of Finders, after all. They did the reconnaissance, and Exorcists got involved later--if there was anything worth their time ( ... )

It couldn't be said that that kind of gruntwork was Giovanni's expertise, either - picking around in the dirt for something useful wasn't something he'd ever been required to do, before. At least not so literally. But he was used to work that didn't have any reward, and looking at the mansion up ahead, even as the last known location of those responsible, it already seemed like an unpromising sight. Just rubble and foundations. It'd seen countless footprints and all kinds of damage since the last time something sinister occurred there, from those combing for the same kinds of clues and those who were just covering them up ( ... )

They were in a rather similar position, in that respect - dealing with unknowns they'd only recently acknowledged. Giovanni'd settled enough, but there'd been plenty of things to think about in the interim, between the new-found position and Heine's presence there; dealing with others was a part of it, but it was a part of it that it took him time to come around to considering. He was, at times, still rather ill-adapted ( ... )

John paused on the pavement outside the house and just stood there, getting used to the feel of the place. Luckily for him, his usual mode of dress didn't seem too out of place here, other than his lack of the hat that seemed so popular - not, of course, that he gave a shit if it wasn't. He hadn't changed the way he dressed for anyone or anything and he was hardly likely to do it now. That was how it worked - people adjusted to his ways, not the other way around, and the few exceptions weren't something he was eager to think about on this bright, sunlit morning decades before he'd been born ( ... )

And, despite the fact that John was so set in his ways, the next time they took a stroll through this city, he'd have a fedora plopped down on his head. He didn't have to change much to pull off the hard-boiled detective look. She, on the other hand, was working on not looking distinct in any way. She had a big mouth sometimes and that could become a problem. If she wasn't looking too flashy, then that was just one less thing to worry about. Her hair remained long, in light curls and her lips painted a more muted red. Her clothing was more suitable to the time and, while it was acceptable to wear dresses and skirts that would show the knees now, she still went for something a little longer. More traditional.

Zatanna's surprisingly good at blending in with the crowd, looking more tourist than investigator even as she peers around the area. She needn't say another word about the magic that was used either in or around this place (or perhaps the magic that permeated this whole city, even -- old magic). This was the sort of thing that ( ... )
