Portal Chamber: Pre-arrivals (Closed to Kanda and Raikou) kandescence August 26 2011, 15:23:56 UTC
Given his routine of waking up at four o’clock, an early morning watch shift was of no difficulty for Kanda. The designated slot--from five until ten--still left him with an hour of time to himself beforehand. But he would have been a lot happier if the watch itself had left him on his own too.

Instead he was stuck having to spend five hours in this little chamber with a man with pink hair, a man who--he anticipated from the moment that he saw him in the hallway upstairs--would likely want to talk to pass the time, which was always the last thing Kanda wanted to do.

Inside the chamber itself, someone had thoughtfully brought two folding chairs down from the house, but Kanda reasoned that the best way to signal his disinterest in casual conversation might be to forgo them all together. Instead, he’d sat cross-legged on the floor in a meditative pose and tried to wholly ignore the fact that pink-hair was there too.

Raikou, on the other hand, was more used to getting to sleep in a bit later - most of his work was, by and large, conducted late into the night. Of course that didn't mean he was any less prepared for his shift with the other, more taciturn young man, but it did mean he was more inclined to also remain quiet.

He'd even brought a book from the mansion's library down there with him. And the fact that Gau had gotten up long enough to make him some tea was just a bonus, really.

Given that, he would have been content to sit in silence for the hour, but this Kanda's actions were really quite rude.

Which was why, several moments later and after he'd settled one of the chairs near a lantern, drank his tea, and had the book resting on his leg, he finally spoke lightly. His voice was low, melodious; the tone almost falsely friendly.

"Are you actually meditating, or are you just giving the appearance to get a little bit more sleep? It's fine if you want to be irresponsible, but I felt it necessary to ask."

Kanda's blood pressure began to rise the moment the man started to speak, and he grit his teeth, jaw tight with irritation. But he wouldn't damn well give the other the satisfaction of seeing him break his pose. He held his ground, his back straight and his eyes closed--his whole body a mask of focus and poise, even as he imagined the satisfaction of trouncing his companion's head into the floor.

"Tch. If you need to have your eyes open to know when something's coming near that's your damn problem." Which wasn't an empty boast, really. Kanda had indeed trained blind often enough to know he wouldn't be hindered if someone tried to take him unawares. In fact, with his sword laid carefully by his side as it was currently, he was confident that one smooth stroke was all he would need to strike down anyone stupid enough to try and sneak up on him.

Not that that was really the point at the moment. The point was that this idiot was insisting on talking for no damn reason whatsoever.

"Oh, I have no concerns with my own skill - just a curiosity as you your ability to multitask."

He gave a soft hum with that and flashed his friendliest smile - right before crossing his legs and leaning an elbow on the barrel, with his temple lightly on his knuckles. His other hand lifted the book and held it open before him, as if losing interest after the mild insult.

It would be interesting to see how this one reacted to a touch of mild provocation and let him know if his pride was such that even minor slights would prick his ego.

Consciousness was slow to return, but when it did, it brought that instant snap of awareness, that instinct that had him holding himself carefully still and he stretched his senses out as much as he was able. He could hear the steady breathing of several others, which meant they'd at least been taken partially alive, but the question was why?

It wasn't time for that man to round up new bodies for another manhunt, but then if they'd printed his voice when he'd rescued Shion and decided the two of them together were worth a special hunt...

But that didn't make sense, and Nezumi had had no indication that they were considering executing any such action, so far as his mice had been able to pick up. What jumbled thoughts he had, however, stuttered to a stop once they focused on Shion, because he couldn't sense the clueless idiot, not at all ( ... )

Kanda had been doubled over, hands on his knees and trying to will his body back into order, when the man suddenly gained his feet and bolted. If he hadn't been so focused on keeping his breath and his body whole, the swordsman might have cursed under his breath. As it was, he still had to take a few seconds to be certain that he was well enough in order to move before he took off after him, and by then the woman had started giving chase as well ( ... )

The tunnel leading from the chamber is without light save from a carried lantern and it twists and turns until, after a distance, it leads to a stone staircase, at the top of which is a trap door that has been left open, hooked back against the near wall ( ... )

[Open] In the Kitchen teacuptarget August 30 2011, 23:04:01 UTC
Gau was sitting at the kitchen table sipping tea, with his trusty notebook and his neat line of pens set out on the table. The teenager was dressed as impeccably as ever, in a sweater vest, dress shirt, tie, and black pants. There was a messenger bag hanging from the back of his chair, each zipper partway open, in a way that seemed almost sloppy compared to the rest of his appearance.

The notebook was splayed open quite as if he wasn't concerned about what was in it being seen, and neat lines of kanji were simply descriptions of things he had seen about the mansion and in the surrounding areas, fairly contextless information.

If anyone looked too closely, or managed to get close before he saw, however, they might have seen him doodling in the corner of the page, a small line of hearts that increased in size slightly with each one, in a variety of styles, from clean and simple to intricate stylistic designs.

The moment he was up the stairs, Raikou paused at the sight of Gau sitting at the table. He gave his partner a glance, then cut his eyes to the woman behind him.. and then glanced down to catch the line of doodles in the teen's notebook.

His lips twitched, amused, before murmuring in Japanese, "My room after they're settled. It's been an eventful morning."

And then long fingers went out to rest on Gau's shoulder as he stepped to the side a bit. "Gau, this is Zatanna-san. Zatanna-san, this is the partner I mentioned. I'm going to see if the professors have been called yet or if they're here so please take care of her while I do so."

The immediate response to Raikou's appearance was, of course, to place both hands over his notebook, in the least subtle and most guilty-seeming way possible. Gau almost felt an urge to glare up at his partner for catching him being childish, even though it wasn't really Raikou's fault, but his own.

However.

His partner wasn't alone.

So the teenager blinked up at the newcomer, and then gave a slight bow over his notebook, without moving his hands from it.

"Of course, you can join me, Zatanna-san! I can... make us some tea... or coffee?"
