Well, the instance config wizard will go through doing the root username and password.

Why did you download such an old version of MySQL, though? 4.1.22 came out November 2006. There are security holes, bad performance, etc.

The current version is 5.1:

(I'm curious as to what documentation or whatever pointed you to MySQL 4.1.22....)

what Awfief said. Use a newer version. The installer will ask you along the way. I don't believe this was the case with 4.1, but there may be no password for local root - you may need to set it.
