this would be solved if trade treaties reflected human rights standards....but neo-liberal assholes like those that run our country would never allow that....studying latin american history makes you very cynical about these things....
I have to feel that this incidence is a reflection of the whole ethical dilemma that is our relations with China. If Yahoo simply withdrew from the country, no one would have internet access at all and dissidents would lose their primary form of expression. But by playing along, Yahoo becomes complicit. If Yahoo were to say that they were no longer going to help the Chinese government catch dissidents, it would be hard for China to just kick them out. And if they did, that could push the country toward revolution. Part of me feels like any trade and interaction is going to help expose people to democratic ideals and avert war by creating interdependence, but at the same time I worry that it just bolsters regimes that are evil.
