My mom lives near Kenai. We did one of those touristy day cruises last summer out of Seward. It was really awesome. I'd seen all of the glaciers and stuff before, but we also went by some islands (read: gigantic rocks) that had little military bases on them. It's much further NE than the chain, but still has a significant military history. It was so interesting to hear about that part of Alaska's story.
Holy CRAP, I want to go on an Alaskan cruise someday...
A friend of mine was an airborne snow-trooper, stationed up in the mittle of BFE Alaska, ostensibly to protect the oil pipelines. Heh, he was pretty miserable. And probably tends to not like white as much as he used to. ;-)
Well, Ferd has an open invitation to come up and visit with his *gulp* family and you're more than welcome to tag along! My mom is building a 6 bedroom, 2700 sq ft log home up there and I can't wait to see it! Anyhow, the cruises are ok, but really you gotta go w/some residents and tour around. Besides, it's too chilly even in the summer to enjoy a cruise.
