After I saw "The Village" I realized that his films aren't ABOUT the supernatural. They're certainly not about the "twist." If you go back and watch them, they're actually about the relationships between his characters. Like the best episodes of "The Twilight Zone", they aren't excuses for spooky stuff to happen: they are vehicles, allegories where the supernatural represents or puts into sharp relief facets of the inherent humanity of the characters.
I loved "The Sixth Sense", "Unbreakable" and "The Village", I really enjoyed "Lady In the Water", but I still can't get into "Signs" and I couldn't bring myself to see "The Happening" (though it sounded interesting).
Y'know what? I didn't really realize that, until you told me that.
That's the same reason why Orson Scott Card is my favorite author. Why, no matter what genre he writes in -- even some, where I typically don't enter for reading material -- I almost always enjoy his stories. (Unless he gets a few too many books into a given series)
I'm wondering if I ought to see "The Happening", or if I'll just be disappointed. We'll see.
I never really got into "Unbreakable". I loved "The Sixth Sense" right away and, like many others, had to see it again right away. I don't really like "Lady in the Water". I loved "Signs" right away - mainly because I loved the concept of faith and the humor that was in there. I kind of enjoyed "The Village", but I think that's mainly due to my Joaquin love and the hand-holding scenes.
For me, "Unbreakable" was about how a man discovered his own capabilities instead of denying them any further, finally reaching his true potential in life. And in so doing, reconnected with his wife and fulfilled his son's hero-worship.
And yes, "The Sixth Sense" was just good. Incredible. It's still my favorite ghost story, ten years later.
Signs seemed a little cheesy to me in some ways... some things too conveniently came together to make it fully believable to me. But then, the relationships between the characters is what made it for me.
And yes, the connection between Phoenix and Howard in "The Village" is what really did it for me.
