The odd feeling of an issue possibly hitting home... (?)

My part-Japanese family eats a lot of rice. And when I say a lot, I mean that we tend to buy 20lb bags (the size of a small child) on a frequent basis. Lately, we've been relating that we haven't been able to find rice as easily in many supermarkets. And when we have, its price has as much as doubled, at some stores ( Read more... )

The downpart of anal retentive budgeting is knowing exactly what goes out (this is also the raison d'etre for budgeting, but I digress)

My electricity bill has gone up 10% , rail transport 8% , airfares have increased by a whopping 50% (comparative flights Scotland - Netherlands)and I think foodprices have risen by some 5%.
I have seen quite a few of my more favoured foodstuff disappear from shelves quite quickly and not be replaced as fast as I`m used to (this might also be explained by Morrissons being a manky supermarket, but still)

Unfortunately, what makes an economy global is - by definition - its impact on ordinary people like you and me.

I honestly need to keep a tighter budget. It's been on the to-do-soon list for my Lady and myself for a little bit.

And howdy... I think I met you in the Politics Forum. What made you decide to befriend me?

I've gotten the impression that some of the food cost increases are due to media hype driving demand up (and when demand on staples increases, price increases: Econ 101).

And some of it is also due to increased transportation costs. If it costs more for the truck to deliver the food, the truck company charges more for delivery, which is carried through to the consumer.

So even if the basic price of the product when purchased directly from the producer is the same, the supermarket cost is going to increase.

Funny how perception can drive reality.

Regardless of how it happens, it leaves me feeling a bit uneasy ( ... )

food storage But it is still a scary thought, there are some things you can't store. And we are a long way from a large town. If things get tight enough fuel wise, it is possible that they just quit shipping up here to our little berg.
