Argumentum ad Indigestiam

In the past little while, I've gotten involved in a political discussion forum or two. And, while I relish the thrill of a truly stimulating bit of discussion and challenging debate, I'm beginning to realize why I quit most debate fora awhile ago ( Read more... )

logic, politics, debate

I do value your opinions. It's just that the presidential debates, or the entire election isn't all that interesting to me, because all they do is attack each other, but doesn't or rarely show interest in the American people. If they can't stand for what they say and defend for what they say...what's the point? They are just looking for ways to uncover the lies that one opponent makes. Therefore I just don't know what to think, and I would have rather voted somebody like Mitt Romney...I have seen what he did for the 2002 Winter Games, and as a Govener for Massachusetts. He had my vote, but I don't think he wanted to deal with a bunch of babies trying to go for power...I think he wanted to deal with intelligent people, and felt that the race would be worthy. Since he stepped down, I have no desire to vote...because I don't even know which presidential candidate is really being truthful about themselves.

I miss Mitt too. If he runs with McCain, that'll solidify my vote. If not, then I'm back at figuring things out between Obama, McCain... and Nader.

There are websites out there which help to study the history of the candidates, and their decisions in various situations. But many are skewed one way or another by the group doing them.

Thanks for commenting. =)

I like a good discussion as long as it's a DISCUSSION. I wish I could discuss politics with my significant other but it appears to be a no fly zone...mostly because she gets really, really angry when I disagree and provide facts to back up my opinions.

Sigh.

I think I get what you're saying. Myself, being the son of an attorney, I've absorbed a few things by osmosis. I can be worse than some people, if I let myself.

I can pick people's arguments apart like removing pieces from a house of cards, and let it fall. And then, present you with my NEW AND IMPROVED! (with 50% more fiber) argument.

Imagine my chagrin when they didn't appreciate it! ;-)

I've since learned to take a more measured approach.

On the same token, I've had some friends with whom it was VERY stimulating to disagree with. One gal I've known in New York for years tends to be more Liberal, while I'm more Conservative)... Back when we were single, the debate used to get pretty intense. And, it was almost like foreplay after a fashion. (I love a woman who can think)

I imagine James Carville and Mary Matalin might have had some of the same, before getting married? ;-)

Heh, I doubt I'm very a very good representative of the US at large. :-P

What do you guys debate about in politics in Canada? Do you curse the US for producing acid rain?

I do remember something about gay marriage awhile ago, which would force the US to recognize gay marriages from Canada, when they come back across the border. (Due to other treaties)

I was glad to read your input on politicsforum some time ago , it was a good well argued post. Unfortunately good, well argued posts can go both ways : i.e. intelligent debate or utter shitstorm.
I've left a great many boards for much the same reason, they bring out the worst in me at times. And that's no good. I look forward to readong more form you.
