oh, man, i don't know these people so it's hard for me to say. maybe the "younger folks" comment was him fishing a little, like "oh, hey, i'm probably too old to be hanging out with you... right?" i've noticed that people of a certain age tend to feel like maybe they're imposing themselves on a younger crowd, and are just being put up with out of respect or something. so maybe slip into conversation that you don't find him to be So Much Older or something and see how he reacts?

I agree that it was probably a bigger reflection on his view of himself than his view on you. I find myself making comments about myself being old when I hang around spritly youngsters now too.
