Once upon at time, in a land far away, there was a beautiful maid. The maid had skin as white as snow, lips red as crimson, far to beautiful to be just a maid. Which he isn’t, this maid, this boy, was a fair prince dressed in rags. The boy was pretty much an orphan, except for his stepmother, who is the current queen of their kingdom. The queen cared absolutely nothing for the boy, even though he expressed nothing but pure love towards her. Not even the boy’s childish love could melt the queen’s ice-cold heart. The queen made the boy a maid and stripped him of all his beautiful clothing, but nothing could strip such beauty from his glorious face.
One day the jealous queen watched from her window as the boy washed her expensive clothing. He sang a lovely little tune while he worked, he even conversed with the little birds that flew around the courtyard; the sound of his voice bringing them near. While the birds loved the tone of the boy’s voice, the queen found it revolting, disgusting even, and absolutely unnecessary. Frowning, she turned on her heel and began to walk to her chamber.
The boy worked on the washing; cleaning the clothing and hanging them on the thin white string to dry.. Humming, he hung another piece of heavy clothing before he noticed a simply wonderful sound. The sound grew louder, as moments passed, until the source appeared. A wonderfully hansom man appeared at the entrance of the courtyard. He held his horse by the reins as he walked closer to the boy.
“Did I hear you say something about finding your true love?” the man asked as he placed a hand on the blade that hung proudly at his hip. The boy blushed, while he was cleaning, he did sing a light song about finding his one true love and wishing they would whisk him away. “What’s your name maid?”
“Kibum, but many call me snow white.” The boy replied as he back up, going closer to the stone steps that lead to his home.
“Such a beautiful name, perfect for such a lovely face.” The man replied with a soft smile.
“And your name?” Kibum asked as he reached the steps, he stumbled on the first one, but caught his balance before he could fall.
“Prince Jinki at your service.” The man said with a grand bow.
“A prince?!” the boy shrieked.
“Yes-“ Jinki began before the other ran up the steps and through the grand door, shutting it once he was inside. Kibum quickly ran up the steps, to his room; he slowly walked to his window and hid behind the curtain, watching the other. “hold on!” the man sighed as he looked up at the window, which belonged to the other. “Won’t you talk to me?” the man called up as the boy peeked through the red curtains. Jinki waited for a reply that never came, “ I’ll be back some other time, fare Kibum and when I do, I’ll take you with me.” The price sighed before leaving the courtyard and mounting his horse. Kibum watched as he rode down the path that leads into town.
“So it is true, princes are beautiful.” Kibum said with a light blush before backing into the wall and sliding down it.
“Mirror, Mirror on the wall who’s the fairest one of all?” The queen asked in a menacing way. She spoke to her enchanted mirror, which was given to her long ago.
“The young prince Kibum, my lady.” The mirror replied in a monotone voice.
“How is that he’s dressed in rags, and covered in filth. Cleans so much that his fingers are worn that he’s still the fairest of them all? Fairer than me?” She asked, throwing her cloak back in anger.
“his skin as white as snow, hair darker than fine wood, lips of crimson. His eyes, so beautiful and deep one could get lost in them. This is why the young prince fair, my dear queen, but what makes the fairest, is his purely innocent heart.” The mirror answered before the queen let out an angered cry.
“How may I become the fairest?”
“As long as Kibum lives, you will never be.” The queen shut the dark curtain roughly, with the mirror concealed, the queen called forth on of her men. “Go into town and fetch me the best hunter you can find.” The queen ordered.
“Yes my queen.” The man replied before heading towards the door.
Kibum dressed in his outing clothes, his only good set of clothing, and grabbed his woven basket. Today he was going to pick flowers for his stop mother. The boy skipped out the door and into the courtyard. He began to walk through it, but stopped when one of the queen’s men entered with another much larger man. “How do you do?” Kibum asked in a cheerful voice earning a smile and nod in response, as they walked past each other. Opening the gate, he heard the two men converse about his identity. Silently laughing, the young prince rounded the corner. The sun shone brightly in the sky, warming the air and turning clothing a brighter shade. A light breeze tickled his skin as he walked into the darken wood. Trees glistened with morning dew; friendly woodland animals came out to play in the small patches of light that came through the trees. The prince sung a small happy tune as he walked even further into the wood.
“My lady, I have brought a grand hunter, like you’ve requested.” The ladies man declared as he walked into the room.
“Good you brought him, bring him in.” The queen commanded as she walked over to her wooden dresser with golden knobs. She picked up a golden box that had been decorated in brilliant jewels that resided there. The servant nodded and motioned for the hunter to enter the room. Moments after the jester, the room filled with heavy footsteps sounded throughout the room. A man came forth, he was rough looking with his long roughly cut hair. He had broad shoulders. Long legs and muscular arms; he looked as if he could murder an oxen with nothing but his hands. Dressed in all black, the man stopped in front of the queen. “I present you the queen!” The hunter bowed, his hair falling has he did so.
“My queen.” The hunter said, “What do you need of me?”
“I have a very important task for you dear hunter.” The queen spoke before walking over to the hunter, box in had. The queen gave the hunter a wicked smile as she came to a stop in front of him. “Are you brave enough to accept it?”
“Anything for my queen” The hunter replied with a bow, “Please tell me my task.”
“You’re loyal?” the queen asked earning a nod from the hunter. “You task it to take this box into the forest, where the fair prince resides, picking flowers.” The queen opened the box and pulled out a shining dagger. “Use this blade and kill him, bring me his heart to prove to me that he is truly dead.” The queen put the blade back into the small chest and handed it over.
“I can’t do that my queen.” The hunter solemnly said as he gravely looked at the box in his hands.
“ I thought you were loyal.” The queen disappoint replied as she went to retrieve the box. “Servant, throw this man and his family in the cellar.”
“No! Please leave my family be!” the hunter said, shrinking to his knees.
“Well you carry out the task?”
“Yes my queen.”
The prince reached the meadow by noon. The sun was high in the sky making the flowers rise to it, and animals want to bask in its glory. Smiling, the young prince kneeled down and began to pick the wonderfully bright flowers that resided there. The flowers, fully bloomed created the illusion that you were sitting in a rainbow. Kibum smiled as he laid the flowers down in his basket, he would occasionally smell the delicious and dainty flowers before placing them in the woven basket. Absorbed in the flowers, Kibum didn’t noticed the slight movement in the bushes, until the sound grew and became more constant. The prince looked up at the forestry, glancing at all the different bushes.
“Hello?” Kibum called out, scanning the forest for the source of the movement. Setting down his basket, he began to slowly walk. Stepping over branches and dead leaves, the prince made it to the brush. “Hello?” he called again; his heart rate increased as he reached out to open the bush. Pealing back a layer, he noticed a small blue jay. “Well hello there.” He picked up the baby bird. “What are you doing in the bush?” The bird chirped. “You fell?” More chirping “Where’s your nest? Up there? Can you fly?” More chirps as the bird try to flap its wings. “You can do it!” Kibum encouraged as the bird vigorously flapped its wings before taking off and flying into the tree. “Good bye now!” He waved to the bird before returning to his flowers.
The hunter watched the scene through the underbrush. His breath caught in his chest as the prince pulled flower out of the ground. His hands rested upon the blade the box was tied so it hung from his hip, as he slowly got up. Not making a sound he made his way to the boy; raising his hand dagger her stopped behind the un-expecting boy. His hand shook, but would not move to strike the young prince. Thinking back to his family the man’s hand began to move, but stopped. ‘The prince did nothing to cause me harm, he’s no animal, I can’t just kill him. Nevertheless there’s my family, my beautiful daughter and strong son, and, oh, my loving wife. I’ll do it!’’ his dropped again. “But the prince is so caring and gentle, how did I get into this dilemma? How can I fix this awful mess?’ The prince turned around to leave, but stopped when he saw the hunter. “Oh hello.” The prince said is a scared voice. The hunter dropped to his knees, the dagger falling from his hand.
“I can’t do it.” The hunter muttered, coming to tears.
“Do what?” the prince asked.
“Kill you.” The hunter said in a strangled voice. Gasping the prince backed away. “Don’t go home, the queen will surely kill you, run my prince. Run far away!” The hunter yelled as he got up; pushing the prince he yelled once more, “Go! Before she finds you!” The prince began to run fast and far. In the distance, he heard a painful cry. Shuddering, the prince raced forward, running into many branches. Willing himself not to cry, he ran faster, sounds of woodland animals filled his ears, making him feel alone and small. The ground beneath him turned to mush as he ran through a marsh, water splashed on his pants as he made his way though. A branch caught his jacket making him yelp and widely flail his arms. Another shriek came from his lips as he crashed through the tress, landing in on his knees, in a weeping mess. The boy curled up right there into a small ball; he brought his knees up to his chest and began to sob. Kibum had never felt so alone and unwanted; tears stained his face and shirt. Animals came out of the darken woods to surround the boy who sat in a spot of light.
A small brown rabbit came up and smelled the prince. It’s small paw brushed the figures leg. Kibum slowly looked up to see the rabbit. “Oh!” he exclaimed, making the animals retreat. “Wait come back!” he called after the animals, which peeked through the undergrowth. “You don’t happen to know a place where I can stay? I’ve had a rather rough day, I just need a place to rest.” The boy said to the animals, to anyone listening. No reply came, the boy began to cry again, suddenly a bird came and begun to tug on the boy’s clothes. The boy looked at the small winged creature as it chirped and began to hop along after a few steps it turned and chirped again. “You want me to follow you?” Kibum asked earning another chirp. He slowly got up and began to follow the bird, animals began to surround him as he walked; deer, rabbits, turtles, squirrels, chipmunks and little birds ran merrily through the woods as they lead the way. The group stopped at the edge of the forest, a bright light hit the boy’s face making him squint. He brought up a hand to shield his eyes, and gasped.
Sitting just beyond a bright meadow, wedged between two hills stood a lovely little cottage. Flowers grew on the sides, vines wound themselves of the sides of the white bricked house, and a small waterfall sat next to the little house. Kibum ran towards the charming cottage, the hoard of animals following shortly behind. Running down the hill, he came to a stop in front of the little house. Straightening up his clothing, the boy went to knock on the door. The boy tapped on the wooden door, there was no reply. “Hello?” he called, “Anyone home?” the boy opened the door slowly before walking into the dark room. The animals followed behind, but quickly retreated when he gasped. “Look at this mess!” Kibum exclaimed. “There’s so many cobwebs, and dust. Oh, look, the sink is over flowing with dishes; and look the broom is untouched.” Kibum walked over and grasped the broom, and swirled it around, watching the dust fall off it. “It’s as if children live here.” Kibum said walking to the sink.” I know what we can do! Let’s clean the house for children. C’mon lets get to work!”
