Rochester to his nephew, the Earl of Lichfield December 23, 1677
My deare Lord, I would not have slipt this opportunity of waiting upon you, but the change of the weather makes itt a dangerous journey for a man in noe better health than I am, neither would you condemne the care I take of my self, did you know how kind an Unckle & how faithfull a servant I preserve for you, the Character you have of mee from others may give you some reason to concider this noe farther than good Nature oblidges you, but If I am ever soe happy to live wher my inclinations to you may shew themsalves, bee assur'd you shall not want very good proofes, how much the memory of y' father, the favours of my Lady Lyndsey, (how long-soever past) & y' owne merritt, can oblidge a very gratefull man to bee faithfully sincerely & eternally deare Nephew Y' most humble servant Rochester.
