Ed and Hank

Part 3 of... Oh baby, baby it's a wild world...

Catch-up: When we last left Ed and Hank they had finished with the closing of Ed's pa's house. (As usual, nothing much happened.) This catches up with them the day after the closing...

Disclaimer: Hank told their story to Annie Proulx. Jack and Ennis are all hers. Ed and Hank ( Read more... )

Well you two certainly keep me happy joetheone October 13 2010, 03:25:04 UTC
Oh I love the trials and tribulations of you two traveling around. I love crowds and Pat hates them so I love your advice on seeing the sights. I usually bend to what Pat likes anyhow. I agree with not seeing the old man in one way and it is his choice and should be his choice you are a good partner. My friend from Salt Lake has been home the past week heading back tomorrow however he is moving to Seattle now and that is good but guess I missed my opportunity to get out to Utah. Oh well, these pictures still make me want to see it all. I have seen so much of the East coast and Europe but the not the west. Maybe someday you sure make it inviting. Thanks for sharing your trip. Joe

Yeah, Hank doesn’t mind crowds, but Ed’s always really disliked them (not that he's even been in all that many). And Hank wasn’t so sure what was the right thing for Ed to do about seeing his pa or not seeing his pa. He asked Ed about it a few times, to try and make sure he was actually thinking about whether he wanted to see him or not, but then he tried to stay out of it and let Ed make his own choice in the matter, like you said.

I’m glad you got to see your friend from Salt Lake. And even if you didn’t get to Utah, Washington is a great place to visit too and you could still make it to Utah sometime if you wanted to too. Hank has seen a lot of the west (and loves it) but he’d sure love to see the East coast and more of the West coast, especially San Francisco, and Europe (and the whole rest of the world too). Although he probably won’t be able to get Ed much further afield than he’s already managed. But he sure is gonna keep trying.

Nice how knowing one's way around big animals can turn out useful. A few years ago a young bull got loose at a fair near here, and was shot (clumsily) by a policeman, just because nobody there knew how to help a confused youngster find his way back to his proper place.
Much harder, but quite healing, is reading what bugs can crawl out from under turned rocks after a loss. The dialogue at the beginning is heart-breaking and heart-mending at the same time-- fear turned to comfort.
The hot pools are wonderful. Thank you all for a real treat.

Sorry to hear about that young bull. I sure wish there had been someone there who could have calmed him down. And yeah, hopefully Ed having to deal with whether or not he wanted to see his pa, and deciding not to, will give him some kind of peace/closure/whatever you wanna call it now.

(And those hot pools sure are beautiful!)
