Thanks so much for posting this. I watched both parts of the interview, and it just reinforced all of my fond feelings about the Granada series. Even at 13 years old, I knew it was something truly special. It and Hardwicke's performance have stood the test of time. And his chemistry with Brett is a lovely thing to see captured on screen. I have a lot of DVDs I never watch, but the Granada Sherlock boxed set is a purchase I have never regretted.

And I love that Watson #1 chose Watson #2. You can't get a higher recommendation than that.

Also, I think it says a tremendous amount about Hardwicke's character that he felt it was a compliment when people accidentally called him David when he first took on the role. That's a person who cares more about staying true to the role than his ego.

I have to agree with you about the David comment!

Immediately upon hearing the sad news, I was struck by the thought of him being reunited Elsewhere with Jeremy Brett, and the two of them sitting by a fire sipping brandy and wondering at the commotion over the newest incarnations of the characters they so well inhabited.

As much as I adore Benedict and Martin, Brett and Hardwicke (and Burke as well) are the true Holmes and Watson of my heart.

Luckily, I think of both Granada Holmes and Sherlock as being so different that they aren't in competition in my mind, I love them both, but I would have loved to have Brett and Cumberbatch play together. I think Benedict said that his mother was friends with Brett, so he knew him as a child.

Speaking of children, I watch both series with my kids and my daughter says (of Brett) he's your Holmes, but Benedict is mine. Sort of like, we all have our fave Doctor (if you follow Dr.Who)

I knew Edward and David were friends, knew each other, but I didn't know it was David himself who recommended Edward as his replacement... I just cried for that: my Watsons and my Holmes (and those of many, many other fans) truly were wonderful people :)

I cheered myself up thinking that maybe, possibly, somewhere right at this moment Jeremy and Edward and sipping tea together again.
