Mod announcement the second!

Apr 02, 2011 11:33

Hello Mycroftees! Not even midday yet and already a second mod announcement, what are we like?

So if you've been reading recent posts up to now you'll know that Raks has handed ownership of Mycrofting over to me. A lot of new members will probably not know who I am, but don't panic! I've been with Mycrofting since its inception (which had nothing ( Read more... )

Hi, I'm another Kim. Oddly enough, the other Kim and I were both at the same NT Live Frankenstein showing (I also live in North Carolina) but never saw each other. My username comes from a combo of my love for cats and an anime character, Hatsuharu from Fruits Basket. He had sort of a multiple personality, where one moment he'd be super sweet and nice, and the next he'd be loud, angry and combative. A friend noted the similarity (I have a bit of a temper sometimes) and thus Kiharu was born. I work at Walmart as a jewelry associate while I'm saving to go back to college and hopefully get a degree in history. I actually blame ACD for starting my fascination with history ( ... )

Fruits Basket :D I've only seen the anime but I love it ♥

Go go history degree! I'm a massive history nerd as well, but I chose a different degree in the end. At least I can satisfy my geekery on the internet :)

Chatty is good though! I like hearing how all the members got into Sherlock and ACD, it's interesting to see how different / similar peoples experiences are.

Um. This. You basically summed up my feelings about Brett and why I was so skeptical going in to the Gatiss/Moffat update. Brett will always be canon Holmes for me. I absolutely fell in love with him. But Benedict has really made this modern Holmes his own -- quite a feat! I was impressed when I watched the series but am even more so now that I've seen him in other things. He really is an exceptional actor. And Martin! Oh, Martin! He's taken John Watson and breathed new life into him! (Okay, really Gatiss and Moffat did that, but I absolutely can't picture anyone else bringing the updated John to life as well as Martin Freeman. He's a revelation.) I loved David Burke's Watson and although I never warmed to Hardwicke to the same degree, I still thought he was a very solidly respectable Watson, but Freeman...just, wow. Who would have ever thought we'd have a bad ass John Watson?

This. You hit Martin and John on the head. I've despaired for years, since the end of Granada, that there hasn't been a decent John Watson to be found. Canon Watson was curious and clever, a man not to be reckoned with, a man worthy of being at Sherlock Holmes' side. But too often Watson is portrayed as simply a sidekick, a goofy sidekick if not a buffoon, often played for comic relief or used to make Holmes seem even smarter. People forget he was a soldier, and that he had to have something to offer Holmes or he wouldn't be there in the first place. Holmes didn't simply need a bodyguard or silent sounding board, he wanted Watson with him for his ability to see things in a way Sherlock couldn't, for his ability to keep up with him and actually help him. Martin was a breath of fresh air in the series. His John was capable, honest, amusing without being a clown, and totally kickass when necessary. He truly was the kind of associate that Sherlock Holmes would want beside him. And wow did Martin deliver! I'm blown away at his ( ... )

Just by way of reminder, I did once, long ago, leave link/discussion post for Five Orange Pips which should be tagged as such. I am still game for that discussion...

Siduri darling, I've missed you! I remember that post well - we could even repost it if you like, with a link to the older one? I don't mind refreshing the topic. I'll make a tag as well, then we can start promoting more discussions like it.

Absolutely. If you want to wait a bit until you get closer to your own readings, that is fine. However you want. It was tagged, so you should be able to find it.

No problem, I think it's time I went out and bought a complete works of Sherlock Holmes, rather than the piddly selected works I currently have. I read fast, so we won't have to wait that long ;)

I'm Lili, from Singapore! I'm the regular commenter on Daily Cumberbatches, and definitely more active on weekdays than on weekends on the comms... symptom of having a desk-bound computer-bound job! :D I'm going to London for the very first time to catch Frankenstein live (and NT Live too now!) and also meeting Annie and Raks and Kim and her friend Sarah all for the first time, our only connection previously was through Cumberbatchfans and now mycrofting and the Umbrella Organisation! The wonder of the internet ( ... )

Don't forget me as well darling, I'll be at the party too :D

Do you want to know something funny? I'm British, but Singapore is my favourite country in the world! I've probably been about 10 times. My parents are in Penang at the moment, which is like my second home, but we usually make a point of going to Singapore whenever we visit. I would love to live there some day (though it will probably be when I retire in 30 odd years D': )

We welcome you!! :DD Make no mistake, I'm very proud to be Singaporean, despite my Japan-love (and now adding to that, Britain-love!), and I'm always very heartened to hear when other people like my tiny little country too.

And that you've been here 10 times!! Oh gosh! The next time you come, we must meet up! As it is I'm super excited about London, and I'd definitely be delighted to meet you there!

My family has been planning a trip to China for years now, and we're going to do it next summer, so that might also include a stop off in Singapore! We're shopping addicts if nothing else, I love me some Suntech City!

I'm really excited about the meet :) it'll be a pleasure to meet you!

Hello, nice to meet you! I think quite a few of us(?) are students as well, so we can totally sympathise with you. :D

I'm Karo, an English philology student from Finland and one day I shall completely rock the field of sociolinguistics. Well, probably not. But I do want to be a researcher when I grow up.

I spent my childhood with the Sherlock Hound cartoon, and have been a hopeless Holmesian geek ever since.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to all the happy Mycrofting times to come!

I think a lot of people here are :) I have a mental amount of work to do currently, so my modding may be a bit sporadic up until summer!

Your degree sounds fascinating darling! Who knows, we might be reading about you in some flashy sociolinguistic magazine some day :D

I don't think I've ever seen that cartoon before, but it looks like something I would have watched as a child. I might have to look into it...

Like the Merlin icon as well ;)

It's kinda impossible for me to be objective about that cartoon due to the heavy nostalgia value, but it's probably safe to say it's entertaining and pretty, if nothing else.

It's really liberal with the canon though. :D I mean, that young woman you see in the opening is Mrs. Hudson, or Marie as they prefer to call her, and she's pretty much everyone's love interest.

:D Your Merlin icon is quite brilliant too. The chainmail really is not the most flattering attire there is...

It looks pretty cute! The Mrs Hudson thing is so hilarious though, I thought that was supposed to be Irene Adler! Funny times.

Hee. I know some guys who like to dress in chainmail. They always complain about the beer gut look. Which is actual beer gut in most cases...

Hi, new mod!

Hope things will settle down here now. It's been a bit weird for a bit. :/

I love Sherlock - its writing, direction, cinematography and especially its cast (and especially its leading man, so prettily depicted in your pic <3). I grew up with the Granada series and watched the Rathbone films one Christmas a few years back when they had one on a day, but while I really like both, it's this version that got me fannishly. Sassy banter and cheekbones were probably to blame.

Tell me about it :/ I go away for 5 weeks and things go crazy. I don't think I'll be doing that again any time soon!

Haha thanks! Sherlock has convinced me why I want to move to London and get back into theatre again (well, actually that was mostly this comm, but whatever). We all need a bit of sass and cheekbones in our lives ♥
