Long story short: I fell in love for the first time in the days before college started when I was 18, he was my first boyfriend, we dated for 8 years including 3.5 years long-distance, he proposed to me in secret and then broke it off a few months later, he dumped me altogether in Oct. 2010, he left my life completely and then re-entered it in June 2011, we started unofficially dating in July 2011, he started getting weird and distant in December, and now we're kind of at an acquaintance-level of speaking to each other awkwardly when we see each other in group settings once or twice a week. It's obvious that he loves me and wishes things were different but his life is kind of screwed up at the moment so I don't think he feels that he can date any woman right now, let alone me with our baggage. And the beard is a fairly new thing, that I am absolutely in love with. He didn't shave for some reason the entire month we were split up, so the next time I saw him he looked all mountain man-ish. But now, he has to shave it every couple of weeks because in the gas an oil field there is this really dangerous gas at the bottom of wells called H2S. He has to be clean shaven so that a mask will seal tightly to his face if H2S comes up the well, or he could die.
