Re-reading Lord of the Rings #6: Backpeddaling on Denethor-- but only a little.

I've always skipped the appendices out of fatigue, so this would be my first time reading them. Until now I suppose I haven't been a fan of Tolkien, so much as someone who happened to like Lord of the Rings and occasional stories from Middle Earth, but The Silmarillion changed all of that. Now I'm willing to read tons and tons of basically ( Read more... )

This was interesting to read (sorry to randomly poke my head into your blog; I literally just started reading The Silmarillion today, and finished rewatching the LotR films during my long period of bed rest earlier this week, so when I saw the name "Denethor" on a friend's reading page I had to keep reading)! Denethor's sons were among my favorite characters throughout all three movies, so seeing that Aragorn played a role in all that was a big shock ( ... )

I first tried The Silmarillion back in middle school, shortly after reading LotR. It wasn't what I was expecting, and I definitely wasn't in the right mindset to really enjoy something so different from what I was used to reading. Now, though, I'm so in love with Tolkien and his passion for worldbuilding that I'll probably plow through it in a week or two.

Hullo! I came to check you out since you just joined the lotr_community! Welcome! In spite of the name of the comm it's friendly to all Tolkien's works from the Silm to the Hobbit to Roverandom!

(Speaking of, I still like The Silmarillion better, even if the split of the line of kings WAS interesting. LOTR-proper has an awful lack of delectable renegade elves. I just. That is an absolutely necessary component. :P)

I had to giggle when I read that, because I would be saying it this way:

"I still like The Lord of the Rings better, even if The Akallabeth was interesting. The Silm has an awful lack of humble and heroic hobbits. I just. That is an absolutely necessary component. :P)"

I think hobbits would have livened up the First and Second Ages considerably, and if Turin had a hobbit for a BFF, he would probably have been a lot less depressed and wouldn't have had so many anger-management issues...

Hi, and thank you!

And fair enough! Turin could've used a pair like Merry and Pippin-- the movie versions, for maximum effect. Eventually he'd have to throw his hands up and forget about anger.

I do love the hobbit lifestyle. It sounds so homey and delicious.
