This is my third reading of Lord of the Rings, I think. The first time was just after high school, so about... let's not say how many years ago, shall we? The second time was in 2006 for the class "Lord of the Rings as Epic," in which there was a lot of essay writing and many geektastic in-class discussions about which character deserved the ( Read more... )

Woooo!

Sam is even more amazing than I remember him being, and I liked him on previous reads, too! He's my favorite of the hobbits by a wide margin. It doesn't hurt that he can cook.

I love that he's so into beer, too. On a character like him, a love for food and drink just ups the awesomeness.

I love how the movies were very true to the Sam/Frodo love... did you ever see that TV promo trailer (official, I swear) about the epic love of Frodo and Sam?

Can't wait for the Hobbit. Thranduil looks wicked and hot.

Holy eff, you aren't kidding. Wow. XD

Hm, is it a trend with male writers? I'd believe it, I just don't usually notice unless I'm rereading something and expecting to see X described in all her/his awesomeness or hotness, and then... don't. But with how detailed LOTR is with Sam's body language re: Frodo, you'd think we'd get more. XD

Also, yes, that is one issue I have with a lot of (usually male authors) -- they don't provide any physical description! For example, I enjoy John Scalzi, but he is typically very bare on the physical description. So I just make up the characters' ethnicity, height, coloring, etc. myself. I am a very visual person, though, so I like to write it into my stories.
