Hand Sewing and GFD Update

Sep 06, 2007 16:06

I've never been a big fan of hand sewing. I'm probably too impatient or too lazy or whatever. Who knows. At my former barony, we wore garb at least 4 times a month... 2 business meetings, class night and dance night. And that didn't include the 1-3 events we attended most months. As a result, I think I developed certain attitudes towards my garb. ( Read more... )

Woo HOOOOO!!! Handsewing!!! Woo de wooo de wooooooo!

Heh. Now you know where my sympathies lie. =)

Seriously, I am a strong believer that every step you take outside your comfort zone is a positive step. That has nothing to do with handsewing versus machine sewing. That has to do with personal growth. For me, doing something carefully on a machine is annoying and slow. But when I make myself do it, I always learn something.

So Brava!!!

I completely understand the *leap* into hand sewing everyday garb, especially underclothes. Before about 3 years ago I would never have dreamt of hand sewing a seam or top stitching by hand. Now most of our new garb is at the "no visible machine sewing" level. It really gives your clothes a different look when it's hand finished. I find that it really doesn't take a whole lot of time once you get a rhythm... I too sit down with a couple of good movies to sew. :)

Well, I have seen your site, but not this portion of it. :) The top stitching that I use is to keep two layers along a garment edge laying down properly, not necessarily for strength. I don't like the "bubble" effect that can happen on hoods, for example, when the lining comes away from the outer layer where they meet, much like the Greenland finds. I don't use top stitching on all my seams. So I guess what I should of said was Stab Stitching. :)

For a picture, see one of my hoods. The Fabric is Blue, the Thread is green, the stitches are small... so it's hard to see.
