March 10, 2010 Rick was putting boxes on the shelves in the not quite-basement when he heard movement above him. He glanced up to the ceiling and smiled, because Mel had been gone since lunch. He knew that she had been stressed about the function at the museum - whether she'd admit it or not - and, now, he could try and get her to relax.
He threw another glance into the box, making sure there was nothing he'd need in the next week, then folded the flaps back down and slipped the box into the hole on the shelf. Rick took a look at the stacks of boxes still to be gone through, but figured they'd sit for another week. As he headed back up the stairs, Rick gave another look to his basement and smiled.
At the top of the stairs, Rick flipped the lightswitch off and closed the door. As he turned back to the kitchen, he stopped short at the sight of Mel leaning against the island, staring into a box of crackers as she slowly chewed. If he was honest, Rick liked her more in jeans and a t-shirt - because he knew she was comfortable - but she also dressed up real nice.
His eyes slowly moved from the black heels, up her legs to the form-fitting black skirt and the short-sleeved red top. Her hair was pulled up and, even though he couldn't see it from that angle, Rick knew that the only jewelry she was wearing was the jade pendant. His attention came back at the sound of Mel giving the box of crackers a shake.
Mel sighed and leaned back and winced as she stretched her neck from side to side. Her head hurt - the cleaning supplies were out in force when she'd arrived at the museum that afternoon, and she'd spent half the night sneezing - and she was so tired, she was wide awake. How did that work, anyway? She sighed again and twisted to set the box of crackers on the counter.
As she turned, the feeling of her personal bubble getting much smaller made her smile as Rick trapped her between himself and the counter. Mel bit her lower lip, smiled and turned her head back. "Hello," she said with a laugh as Rick dropped his head and started kissing her neck, right above the small, silver chain of her necklace.
He mumbled a hello and continued to kiss her neck, moving up to her jaw and then pulled back and smiled at her. "You should dress like this more often," he told her with a wink. Mel raised an eyebrow and looked over his shoulder as she smiled. She reached up to pat his cheek and managed to slip out from between him and the counter.
"We need to work on your decision skills, pal," she told him, grabbing the box of crackers and closing it as she moved around the island and toward the cabinet the crackers had come from. Rick's eyes narrowed and he leaned against the counter. "Well, you said I should wear nothing more often," she told him, not having to look up to see the grin on his face, "and now you say I should wear clothes."
Mel sighed and turned back with a shrug. "I just don't know how to keep you satisfied," she said with a false disappointment. Rick rolled his eyes and pushed off the counter as Mel moved to the sink and rinsed the cracker off her fingers.
"Listen here, missy," he told her as she moved back around the island and rejoined him. Mel raised an eyebrow and smirked as she waited for him to finish. Rick, however, had no intention of finishing the statement and, instead, wrapped his arms around Mel. He stared at her for a second before nodding slightly. "How was the thing?"
Mel let out a breath and leaned forward to rest her head on his chest. "It was good," she said, fighting back a small yawn. "Have to go back tomorrow," she mumbled into his t-shirt.
"Why?" he asked, leaning back to look down at her. "They've got you on clean up crew, too?" Mel shook her head and smiled slightly.
"I think I have an interview."
"For the news?" he asked, starting to step backwards and pulling Mel with him. She managed to stay in place as he moved back and reached up to pull her hair free from the clips holding it in place. Rick moved over to the coffee table and reached down for one of the remotes before aiming it toward the bookcase.
"For a job," she sighed and shrugged when Rick looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "I have no clue," Mel added, shaking her head as she set the clips down on the counter and pushed off. Rick held out a hand and she stopped short, eying him. Rick waved the hand quickly and tugged her closer as soon as Mel took his hand.
"What kind of job?" he asked as the music started coming out of the stereo on the shelf. Mel let her hands hang free at her side as Rick began to move her around the living room in a small circle.
...just knowin' you're still walkin' along with me... livin' out the great adventure, I know this much is true...
"They want to overhaul the database or-" she started, but was interrupted by another yawn. Lifting her hands, Mel adjusted her stance as Rick took one hand, and her other rested on his shoulder. Neither of them was very coordinated when it came to dancing, so they'd been practicing as the wedding date got closer.
"Do you want the job?" Rick asked, leaning back slightly to look down at their feet. They'd gone to a few dance classes, but couldn't keep going due to his schedule at the station.
"I'm still trying to figure out why he wants me," Mel replied as she caught Rick's chin and lifted his head.
"That's easy," Rick replied, pulling away from her and grinning, "you're awesome?" Mel rolled her eyes slightly and shifted so that she could rest her head on his shoulder again. Rick smiled and rested his cheek against her forehead.
...your love is so surprisin', and each time I'm realizin'... I'm giving credit where it's due; the best part of me is you...
"You're hot." Mel laughed. "No, hon, I mean you're warm," Rick said, stopping and pushing her head up. "You feelin' alright?" he asked, going into EMT-mode and looking at her eyes. Mel blinked and nodded before shaking her head.
"Allergies. I'm fine." Rick gave her a look - which she returned - and he resumed the proper stance.
"Well... you're really hot, too," he whispered a moment later. Mel reached down and grabbed his side, which made him laugh and give her a dirty look. Rick gave up on the proper stance and pulled Mel into a hug as he continued to spin her around the room, rolling his eyes at the sappy song that shuffle had picked.
...you're the sunshine in my morning, the best part of me is you...
