They sound like such an old married couple. :D I wonder how much of Shatner's jerkiness is his Shatner's Public Persona thing and how much is really real, or even if there's that much difference.

they move further and further away from being famous for Star Trek until, for some of us, they are notable simply for their personae in appearances like these. Which are, to varying extents, both real and performed.

Exactly. I think it's definitely a factor. I look at, say, Chris Pine or Christopher Pike (the first one) and they don't interest me nearly as much. And even if they weren't friends at first, there's an obvious chemistry between them. So yeah, it all folds back on itself.
